CBD Oil, Hemp Fruit Chews, & Vaping: How to Use CBD and Why It's Beneficial!

How to Use CBD Oil and Why it’s Beneficial

Despite being a controversial landmine, CBD oil has a lot of potential as a natural remedy for several medical conditions. But how do you use and why is it beneficial? Read on to learn more.

Better known as CBD oil, cannabidiol is a natural remedy used to treat several ailments. It contains more than 100 known chemical elements found in cannabis sativa. But unlike marijuana, CBD oil relieves symptoms without giving you a sensation of getting “high.” This is because CBD oil is made by extracting it from cannabis and diluting with hemp seed oil, coconut oil or other carrier oils. It offers multiple health benefits backed by scientific evidence. But before diving into its benefits, here are a few tips on how to use CBD oil.

How to Use CBD Oil

There are multiple methods of consuming CBD oil including edibles, topicals, sublingual products, and vaping & smoking.

  • Edibles

Edibles are a discreet method to use CBD oil. They mask the weedy taste and include mints, truffles, and gummies. It takes up to two hours for the effects of edibles to kick in. It is important to note that eating CBD exposes you to the first-pass effect. This means that the digestive tract and liver breakdown the CBD, and your body absorbs 20%-30% of it within two hours.

  • Topicals

These are applied directly to the skin and come in the form of CBD-infused creams, lotions, transdermal patches, salves, and balms. Topicals are effective for treating skin conditions like eczema and localized pain like joint swelling. Unlike edibles, topicals are not subject to the first-pass effect. Due to the poor permeability of the skin as compared to mucous membranes, topicals need to have high amounts of CBD or be applied generously.

  • Sublingual Products

If you’d rather avoid the sugar and preservatives found in edibles, you can try sublingual products. They include solutions made by dipping cannabis flowers in alcohol or oil and include tinctures, sprays, lozenges, and oils. Sublingual products are absorbed under the tongue and as such, take effect faster and preserve more CBD. Holding CBD oil under your tongue for at least 30 seconds is important as it allows for faster and greater absorption with ease.

  • Vaping & Smoking

Vaping and smoking send CBD directly to the bloodstream, hence faster results. The body absorbs 34% to 56% of the CBD in less than 10 minutes. CBD flowers can be smoked in a joint. You can also inhale CBD concentrates in the form of sugar waxes with a vape pen. A vapor with a cartridge containing CBD oil comes handy as well. Vaping and smoking CBD is only for adults ages 21+.

Benefits of CBD Oil

Relieves Chronic Pain and Inflammation

CBD oil is effective for relieving chronic pain due to fibromyalgia. It also treats common pain and prevents the nervous system from degenerating. It is used as a legal remedy for cancer pain and multiple sclerosis. Treating chronic pain and inflammation with CBD oil also reduces the risk of non-infectious conditions like Alzheimer’s disease, autoimmune disease, heart disease, and cancer.

  • Reduces Anxiety and Depression

Anxiety and depression are mental illnesses with devastating effects on patients and their families or friends. The World Health Organization ranks them as the sixth and number one contributors of disability respectively. An article published in 2015 cited that CBD is a non-psychoactive compound that helps reduce anxiety in people with anxiety-related disorders. These include panic disorder, PTSD, social anxiety disorder, OCD and general anxiety disorder.

  • Helps Treat Heart Ailments

Heart disease is one of the leading health problems and causes of death in the world. And while eating a healthy diet helps, CBD oil also alleviates some of the symptoms. A study published in 2017 found that CBD oil prevents blood pressure fluctuations due to emotional distress. It does this by reducing cholesterol levels, artery blockage, blood pressure and cardiovascular-induced response. It also prevents inflammation and oxidative stress, both of which are precursors to heart disease.

  • Alleviates Cancer-Related Symptoms

CBD oil reduces symptoms due to cancer and the side effects of cancer treatment. It reduces nausea and vomiting induced by chemotherapy. You should keep in mind that CBD isn’t always effective and your doctor may prescribe alternations. A recently published study cited that CBD halted the spread of breast cancer cells.

  • Treats Skin Conditions

Studies have shown that CBD oil can be effective for treating skin conditions like eczema. It works by encouraging the death of abnormal cells and inhibiting oil production, effectively preventing acne. CBD has anti-inflammatory properties that lower the production of sebum. It also contains nutrients like Vitamin E that nourish your skin.

  • Treats Type I Diabetes

The anti-inflammatory properties of CBD oil go a long way towards easing the symptoms of Type I Diabetes. This condition occurs when the immune system attacks pancreatic cells and causes inflammation. Studies have also shown that CBD oil slows down the progression of Type I diabetes.

  • Treats Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is one of the most complicated mental illnesses and managing symptoms is not easy. Many treatment options come with ugly side effects. The good news is that CBD oil is not one those treatments. It alleviates the symptoms without the risk of side effects. This is unlike THC, a psychoactive compound in Marijuana that actually increases psychosis in users.

  • Calms Epilepsy

CBD has been proven to have anti-seizure properties that help calm epileptic patients. This is also the reason it is used to treat neurological disorders in children. In June 2018, the FDA approved Epidiolex for treatment of rare forms of epilepsy that often affects children aged 2+ years. The drug is made from purified CBD oil, which also treats complications due to epilepsy such as neurodegeneration.

Additional Benefits of CBD Oil

  • It helps modify brain circuits associated with substance addiction
  • It improves sleep quality and quality of life in people suffering from neurological diseases
  • It helps users navigate daily stresses

It is worth noting that CBD oil interacts with some medications, hence the importance of talking to your doctor before use. And while there’s a lot we still don’t know about CBD, it is clear that it is a safe treatment for many health conditions.
